Social Skills Group
Lead by Ms. Betsy
Ms. Betsy's social skills groups exemplify the transformative power of integrating therapy and play. By focusing on cooperation, turn-taking, problem-solving, and communication within a small group setting, these sessions provide elementary-aged participants with the tools they need to thrive socially. The personalized attention, engaging activities, and intimate atmosphere create a unique learning experience that empowers children to build their confidence, regulate their emotions, and foster genuine peer connections. The confidence gained in the group setting often carries over to other areas of their lives, such as school and family interactions. Ultimately, these groups serve as a stepping stone for children to navigate the complexities of social interactions with grace and kindness.

FAQs
Q: What’s the purpose of this group?
A: This group is designed to help preteen girls build emotional resilience, strengthen their relationship skills, develop their own sense of identity, and explore their personal values—all in a fun, supportive, and therapeutic space.
Q: Is this group therapy or a class?
A: It’s a therapeutic group—not a clinical treatment group. It blends psychoeducation, creative activities, and supportive peer interaction. Participants are not required to share personal stories unless they feel comfortable.
Q: What kind of activities will the group include?
A: Each session includes a short lesson, hands-on or creative activities (drawing, roleplay, games, mindfulness), and structured group discussion. All content is developmentally appropriate and trauma-informed.
Q: What topics are covered?
A: We explore emotional awareness, stress management, self-compassion, healthy friendships, group identity, values, perspective-taking, cause and effect, decision-making, and navigating change.
Q: Who leads the group?
A: The group is facilitated by Roxie Powell, LMFT, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with extensive experience working with preteens and teens.
Q: What if my child is shy or unsure about group settings?
A: That’s totally okay. We ease into group connection through low-pressure activities that help participants feel safe and included. Many kids begin the group feeling a little nervous and leave feeling confident and connected.
Q: Is parent involvement required?
A: Parents will participate in an initial intake assessment and in a parent group at the end of each semester. The group itself is designed just for the participants, allowing them space to grow independently. The one-time parent group is an opportunity for parents to hear about the growth and experiences their children engaged in.
Q: How do we sign up?
A: Contact us to schedule an intake to ensure this group is a good fit.
Social Skills Group (5th - 7th grade)
Lead by Ms. Stephanie
Children participating in Ms. Stefanie’s Social Skills Group will learn how to better understand and manage their big feelings while being around friends who have similar struggles. This group will work towards creating acceptance and building confidence while learning about perspective-taking and how to see their environment from multiple lenses. Group process will focus on understanding self and others and conflict resolution, how to set boundaries, and use an assertive voice to advocate for our needs. Participants will work to better understand “unfairness,” which can cause frustration and feelings of injustice. They will work on frustration tolerance skills and how to manage inner mad dragons better. The group’s over goal is to improve self-acceptance, so that we can be more flexible and accepting of others, develop self-confidence and feel increased mastery over our own emotional strength. Each week includes creative activities, games, and group discussion to keep kids engaged and growing!

“Trauma is the invisible force that shapes our lives. It shapes the way we live, the way we love and the way we make sense of the world. It is the root of our deepest wounds.” - Gabor Maté
Trauma-Informed counseling is a therapeutic approach and mindset which focuses on “what happened to you”, rather than “what is wrong with you”. What happens inside of you during a traumatic event (especially those which occur in childhood) can shape your experiences and have a long lasting effect on your life and relationships. Through trauma-informed counseling our clinicians collaborate with you in a meaningful and compassionate way to reconnect you with your authentic self.
